Meet the Goblins of "The Last Goblin Queen"

When people first hear the word “Goblin,” they often imagine monsters lurking in caves or raiding travelers on lonely roads. The Goblins of the Kingdoms are something very different.

Goblins are one of the great Lineages of the world, known for their resilience, ingenuity, and deeply rooted communities. They are, on average, the shortest of the Lineages, with skin in varying shades of green and distinctive pointed ears. While outsiders sometimes underestimate them because of their size, that mistake rarely lasts long.

What truly sets Goblins apart is something called a Knack.

Every Goblin is born with one.

A Knack is an inborn magical talent unique to the individual. Most Knacks are subtle rather than dramatic — the sort of ability that makes a Goblin naturally exceptional at a particular task. One Goblin might instinctively understand how to repair broken tools. Another may have an uncanny sense for hidden tunnels, flawless balance, or the ability to calm frightened animals.

In Goblin society, these talents shape everyday life. Craftsmen, merchants, explorers, scholars, and guards all rely on their Knacks as naturally as breathing.

Some Knacks, however, are far more powerful.

A rare few Goblins possess dynamic abilities capable of extraordinary feats: shaping stone, vanishing into shadows, or wielding tremendous physical force. These stronger Knacks usually come at a cost, exhausting the Goblin after use and requiring significant rest to recover.

This balance between practical skill and rare magical power has shaped Goblin culture for generations. Goblins tend to value usefulness, creativity, and perseverance over grand displays of strength. In many Goblin communities, being dependable is considered far more admirable than being impressive.

At the heart of Goblin civilization stands Goblin City, home of the Goblin Palace. Built in the shadow of the towering First Mountain, the city is one of the largest population centers in the Kingdoms. Bustling markets, workshops, public squares, and crowded neighborhoods spread outward from the Palace District, creating a city that is lively, industrious, and constantly in motion.

While portions of Goblin City extend into the mountain itself — including ancient halls, tunnels, and older stone districts — most of the city rises above ground. The First Mountain looms over daily life, but Goblin City is very much a thriving surface metropolis rather than an underground realm.

To outsiders, the city can feel overwhelming: lantern-lit streets packed with merchants, the sound of hammers echoing from workshops late into the evening, and narrow side roads leading unexpectedly into hidden courtyards or old stone passages. But to the Goblins, it is a living symbol of endurance — a city that has adapted, expanded, and survived through countless generations.

The Goblins of the Kingdoms are not defined by savagery or greed. They are inventors, laborers, rulers, scholars, parents, rebels, and dreamers.

And every one of them carries a little magic within them.

The Kingdoms and the Void

About one hundred years ago, the Goblin Kingdom was ascendant, the center of culture and power for the other Kingdoms: Human, Elvish, Ogre, and Naga. The Goblin Kingdoms were ruled by a long line of wise Goblin Queens. The forces of the Void Cultists however gained a foothold in the Human kingdom, corrupting the Kingdom and allowing the Void to grow in power. The other Kingdoms, along with about half of the Human Kingdom and led by the High Paladins, formed an alliance under the Treaty of Love, but it was almost too late. The forces of the Void fought the allied Kingdoms, and all of the Kingdoms suffered tragic losses. At last, the Goblin Queen Gabrielle fought with the Void’s Disciple directly using the ancient Crown of the Goblin Queens, sacrificing herself to defeat the Void.   Queen Gabrielle was buried in a tomb, along with the crown of the Goblin Queens, at the site of the battle. The Human High Paladins rebuilt the Human Kingdom, vowing that the Human Kingdom would be...

Coppercrawlers, a LGQ short story

Rain-soaked trails, mossy ruins, and the kind of companionship you only earn by sharing a pack and a stubborn sense of wonder—Garnet wouldn’t trade her life on the road for anything. Alongside her parents—Gleb, a gruff, brilliant veteran of a hundred expeditions, and Glerich, a calm scholar whose uncanny sketches can capture a lost age in a few quick strokes—Garnet combs the Wildwoods for forgotten Goblin history. They bicker, they banter, they keep their safety rules… mostly. And when they finally uncover a long-buried site that shouldn’t exist, the three must rely on what families do best: trust, teamwork, and the quiet certainty that no one gets left behind. https://www.amazon.com/Last-Goblin-Queen-Coppercrawlers-Kingdoms-ebook/dp/B0GYM4SGVH?ref_=ast_author_mpb

Alchemy

Most of the “magic” of the Kingdoms is rooted in Alchemy. It is a learned discipline and does not require any supernatural agency on the part of its practitioners. Alchemy is divided into three branches, each associated with a distinct alchemical material. Distillation uses Elixir and focuses on extracting the essential properties of a substance into a concentrated form. Transformation uses Catalyst and allows one material to be changed into another, sometimes with the potential to revert to its original state. Amalgamation uses the Alchemist’s Flame and enables the combining of unlike materials into a single alloy that retains properties of both. The more advanced the Alchemist, the more abstract the properties they are able to manipulate.
